How To Teach Children Magic
As you probably are quite aware, children are like little thirsty sponges that soak up information at an impressive rate. So, if you are going to be teaching magic tricks to a child or to many children you need to be prepared for all the questions that they can ask... and, believe me, kids can ask some doozies. Their honesty combined with their curiosity can be both difficult and endearing.
The first thing you will want to establish with kids is that you know what you are talking about. It is you that is the expert. You should do a few simple tricks yourself ending with the one you plan on teaching them how to do.
Depending upon the age of the child or the children, choose a magic trick to teach them that it is possible for them to do considering their height and the size of their hands.
On the other hand, if you are not a magician, don't pretend to be and just have some fun with some very simple tricks that you can do.
If you happen to be the parent (aunt, uncle, Godmother or Godfather, Grandmother or Grandfather) of a budding magician and he or she is begging and pleading for a magic kit, you can find some very good ones online (Illusionist is a good site) or at your local magic shop.

The Mysteries of Occult Magic
John Henry Anderson named himself the Great Wizard of the North in the early 1800’s. This famous Philippe usually appeared in a costume of an oriental wizard, who claimed he had powers of second sight, but even some of this can be traced directly to the use of magic. Bill Robinson used his skills to expose the frauds carried out by spiritualists, along with John Maskelyne, Harry Kellar, and Harry Houdini. Their targets were men like the Davenport brothers, who claimed to be spiritualists, but were nothing more that skilled conjurers.
Some of the most dramatic conjuring illusions ever presented on stage were inspired by eerie tales of the occult. Even today, the influences of the occult (reciting magic formulas, devil costumes, mysterious puff of smoke which leads to something vanishing) can be seen in contemporary conjuring acts.
The occult trick that follows has nothing to do with ancient black arts, but has been modified by masterful conjuring tricks. However, if you can master this and others like it, you will be spooking and fascinating people everywhere you go.

You will need: a teaspoon and a cigarette
To prepare the trick: In advance, moisten the tip of your middle finger of your right hand. Dip the moistened tip into some cigarette ashes and shake off any excess. Hide the ashes that you used.
Perform the trick: Hold you hands naturally at your side and as for a volunteer from the audience. Ask to see her hands and pretend you are reading her palms. Then ask her to turn her palms down so you can examine the backs. Take a hold of their hands so your fingers are touching her palms. Gently press your middle finger onto her left palm to leave a black mark. Tell her you need her to move her hands apart further and bring them about six inches farther apart then let her hands and yours drop to your sides. Ask her to make tight fists with her hands. When she does point back and forth between both of her fists. If she tells you to stop at her left fist, tell her to lower her right. If she tells you to stop at her right fist, tell her to lower her right fist. Remind her to keep her hand tightly closed. Now ask an audience member who smokes to light the cigarette and flick some ashes onto your spoon. Step away from the volunteer, mutter some magic words, and blow the ashes of the spoon towards your volunteers fist. Tell her the devil has been to work on her and if she opens her fist she will have proof because the devils black mark will be in her palm.

In addition, even if this does not apply exclusively to stage circumstances, magicians can make use of impromptus when deciding to perform a coin trick. Moreover, coin gimmicks are a rather regular piece of equipment accompanying a magician, even in impromptu conditions. The impromptu situation is, most of the times, just the impression of the spectator, whereas the magician has taken a long time and a lot of practice to manage so marvelously a coin trick.
However, beyond impromptu circumstances and coin gimmicks, stage magic frequently requires larger magic props, suitable for catching the attention of a large public. Of course, do not instantly assume that, since you are no longer dealing with close-up magic, you should no ask for the assistance of one (or more) of the members of the audience. On the contrary, in order to annihilate their suspicion, you need to draw one (or more) of them into your magic performance. Obviously, you also need to consider several points in the selection of your volunteers. Remember that in stage magic you have to remain in control of your performance as much as possible. Certainly, the introduction of someone exterior to the practice may interfere with your control. However, it does not have to be like that, insofar as you are careful about the spectator you choose.
For instance, during the magic performance, you can distribute items from your magic equipment to spectators. In the meantime, you can select another man, more suitable to offer you his help.
Pay attention to one detail. While you are selecting another person, do not make it obvious that the other one was bothering you. On the contrary, you must make it seem just another part of the program. In the end, all sorts of unforeseen situations can appear during stage magic performances. You need to stay alert permanently, without appearing too stresses about it, in any case. The secret of tricks performed in front of large audiences is in your manner of entertaining them, without turning it all into a circus show. Remember that you are not there to be a clown. You need to entertain them, but you need to do it in an enchanting, rather than ridiculous manner. This is why you are a magician.

If you have been doing your homework, then you will observe that the masters do the top 3 things while performing magic in front of an audience:
1. Do a nice patter - this means that you should put your act well by pulling some appropriate dialogue to perform your magic trick. Learn some jokes, ask your audience some questions and use a lot of hand movements. This will make them distracted but focused on you instead of finding out how you did the magic. A magic show can turn into a theatrical event if you want it to become one. This is not as easy as you think and you will not get by just a few practices and watching the masters do it.
You need a lot of effort, discipline and ability on your part and of course countless practice. To guide you in this trick you should remember and follow religiously two things: a) maintain eye contact with your spectator. Be sure that you have your spectators' attention only to you and listening to whatever you say; b) it pays if you have a sense of humor because it makes your audience feel relaxed and conditions them only to be caught off guard of what you have to perform.
2. The after effect - after wowing your audience with your act, let them continue their amazement with your trick, let them continuously react to your next tricks. Do not make them lose their attention to you and most importantly, do not say anything. If they asked you how you did that just remain quiet. Never pull the plug and give away your act or else all the mystery will fade away.
3. Be confident - Never perform in an audience if you know that you are not yet ready. Nervousness can easily give your trick away. A lot of practice breeds confidence. You need to convince your audience that not only your trick is magical but you as well.
If you master all these techniques, it will be much easier for you to win your audience - kids or adults. You can even go from up close magic to platform magic and stage magic like what Copperfield does but of course that requires a lot of experience and expertise plus a lot of help from cameras.
The key to being a master magician is to learn how to perform magic in an instant using a lot of borrowed objects. Magic is just a quarter of your trick but how you do your trick is the most important. Your presentation in front of an audience is the key not some spectacular, complicated magic.

Magic Tricks You Can Do With Ease
| Criss Angel and David Copperfield are two of the most famous magicians in entertainment. Their performances have renewed interest in magic tricks and they regularly draw huge crowds to their shows. If you want to be a master magician, there are simple magic tricks you can do at home. In this article, we'll show you a few techniques that will help you astound your audience. For the "Film Prediction" trick, ask several people to each name a movie and you write each of the titles on sperate slips of paper. Fold the pieces of paper and throw them into a container. After writing down the titles, you write the name of one of the films on a final slip and show it to everyone. Have a volunteer reach into the container, randomly select a piece of paper and read it aloud. It will be the movie you predicted. How is this possible? When the first volunteer names a movie, say "Pirates Of The Caribbean", write it down. When the other volunteers name a movie, you continue to write "Pirates Of The Caribbean" on each slip of paper. This is the secret. Just be casual about it make sure no one sees what you're writing! One of the easiest magic tricks to perform is called "Cold As Ice". This takes a little preparation but is very simple to do. Pour some water into a cup and whisper magical words. When you turn over the cup, all that comes out is a chunk of ice! The secret is the cup contains a sponge that absorbs the water and prevents the water from spilling out. The ice is already on top of the sponge and simply falls out. Beforehand, stuff the sponge into the mug and make sure that it rests on the bottom. Place the ice on top and you're ready to go. Before you perform the trick, you'll have to experiment with the amount of water to pour into the mug. The more water that you pour in, the more impressive the trick will be, but beware, if you pour too much water into the cup the sponge won't be able to absorb it all. These are simple magic tricks but there are a few things that can make your act seem like it came straight from a magical world! Remember that a magician never shares his secrets. Resist the temptation to reveal how the trick worked and never do the same trick more than once for the same audience. It makes it too easy for the audience to guess how it was done. Wherever you can, borrow the objects from the audience. Borrowing from the audience makes it seem like the magician hasn't had time to do anything sneaky to the item. Creating the magical aura of illusions can make you a hit at any gathering but it's important that you practice your magic tricks first. Never do a trick in front of an audience unless you are thoroughly familiar with the routine. It's also important to be lively and enthusiastic while you're performing. Why Use Magic Tricks With Sponges
I worked with classic red balls for years, but I got sick and tired of playing hide and seek with them when they rolled off the table. I also got sick of the clown nose comments. This is why I further developed sponge magic.
I have spent many years developing material (plenty of classic sleights and several different routines) but the handling I do most often is a quick "Miser Dream." I slip my hands into my back pockets, grab the jumbo earplug in the left hand and one of the small earplugs into my right. Then I quickly pretend to "find" several earplugs on other people's elbows, ears, etc- and each time I pretend to put in into my left hand, but of course just hold out the same one earplug in my right.
To finish, I produce the earplug from my own ear (or wherever) and jam "everything" that is in my left hand into a spectator's hand. I just tap the back of their hand with the one small earplug and just stand back and SAY NOTHING - the longer they wait, the more tension builds and when they open their hand - BOOM. Talk about feeling like a REAL magician!
This is also a great trick for serious hecklers. They make some dumb comment and I say something back. And then when they make another dumb comment (which they almost always do) I just say, "I don't think you're listening," and I pretend to spot something in their ear. Finally, I just say "Ohhhh, that explains it!" and pretend to pull the jumbo earplug out of their ear. Without saying a word I've been able to make the heckler the butt of a great magic sight gag, with all his friends busting a gut. It's clear sailing for the rest of the show!
There are other great magicians who have created effects with stuff OTHER than sponges. "Lazarus" is a wonderful bar effect where the classic "do as I" routine is performed with matches.
"Re:Cap" is a very fresh transposition between a borrowed coin and the CAP of a salt shaker standing at the end of a table. Magicians constantly floor folks with this stunning opener for years.
There are a lot of different things magicians can do with sponges. Look around for a sponge magic trick to work into your routine. You'll be pleasantly surprised by the reactions you get from your audience.

One of the oldest magic tricks in the book is "Find the Card". All you need is a normal 52 card deck for this trick to be successful. When it comes to the preparation of this trick you only need to make sure you see the bottom card of the deck. Only as an example we will just say that the bottom card is an ace of spades. Next, you should fan your cards out and ask someone from your audience to pick a card. Let your volunteer take the chosen card from the deck and that they should remember it. The next thing you need to do is take the deck and place it in the face down position on the table. Tell the volunteer to put their card on the top and cut the deck once. Then, tell them to take the bottom half of the now cut deck and place it on top of the other half deck. Then, you should grab all of the cards and fan them out to where you can see the faces of the cards. All you have to do is look for that Ace of Spades, or whatever card was on the bottom in the beginning of the trick. The card below your originally memorized card is the card the volunteer picked! That is a very neat and simple trick that any kid can do. If you child is at all interested in being successful at more than a few tricks then the "Find the Card" trick is a necessity. The reason that magic trick for kids is important is because it teaches a key lesson with being able to memorize a card as well as follow a card. Anytime that you are told to memorize a card in order to perform a magic card trick, you should know that it is usually referred to as the "key card". Those two things are important to the world of magic and illusions and is a must for every magician to know. How To Amaze With Magic
The Amazing Sugar Cube
Can you make a pencil mark that has been placed on a cube of sugar pass mysteriously through water and onto the hand?
On any one side of the cube of sugar draw a heart, a number, or a cross with heavy strokes. Pick up the cube and press your thumb firmly against the drawing. The mark will come off the sugar and show on your thumb. (As this is the secret of the trick, do it quickly so it will not be noticed.) Drop cube in glass of water.
Pick up your friend's hand and quickly press your thumb firmly against the palm of his hand as you are drawing his hand toward the glass.
Place his hand over the glass of water and tell him to keep it down firmly. Hit the glass a sharp tap with the pencil, saying, "I am now releasing the vibrations."
Then tell your friend to look at his hand. He will see the mark and will think it came through the water onto his hand!
Materials: Soft lead pencil, cube of sugar, three-quarters of a glass of water.
The Dollar Bill and bottle Trick
Can you remove a dollar bill from under a bottle without touching or upsetting the bottle?
Place the bottle upside down on the bill, either on a table or the bare floor. Roll up the bill carefully, touching only the edges of the bill so that your fingers do not come in contact with the bottle. As you roll the bill, the bottle will be pushed along until it is finally off the bill.
Materials: Dollar bill and pop bottle.
The Magician's Assistant
Can you remove a coin from under a cup without touching the cup?
Place one coin on a table, put the cup over the coin, and tell your friends that you are going to remove the coin without touching the cup.
With the second coin, which you have kept concealed in your hand, tap the table from the underside just under the cup, saying, "Here is that coin."
Naturally, your friend will then pick up the cup to see if the coin has disappeared. Now you quickly pick up the coin that was under the cup and say, "I told you I could pick it up without touching the cup." Your friend has unwittingly been a magician's assistant!
Materials: Two coins and a cup.
The Last Match
In this game, can you figure out how to make sure that your opponent always picks the last match?
Arrange fifteen matches side by side on a table. Tell one of your friends that you can always make him pick up the last match, each of you alternating in picking up one, two or three matches at a time. It doesn't matter who starts.
The secret of this trick is to make certain to leave five matches on the table for your opponent the third time around. Then, no matter how many matches he picks up, he will lose the game. For instance, if he picks up one, you take three, leaving the last one for him. Or if he picks up two, you take two. If he picks up three, you take one. In each case, the last match is left for him.
Following are two of the several combinations you can use to arrive at the point of leaving the five matches for your opponent.

Quick And Easy Kids Magic Tricks
Tricks such as the Broken Pencil Trick, the Eggcup Trick, and the Vanishing Coin Trick are frequently part of magic kits sold to kids, and they're easy to do. Most kits include all the things you'll need to perform these tricks.

If you have a hard time finding a decent magic trick, it's easy enough to do kids magic tricks using only everyday items you find around the house. You just need a single pencil to perform the Rubber Pencil Trick.
You can make the pencil look rubbery if you hold it loosely near the tip and wobble it around. Kids love seeing these kinds of illusions.

Now comes the ‘trick’ part; tie the ring to the string with the audience watching it. Tell them you are going to burn the string and the ring will ‘magically’ continue to float in midair. The ring indeed free floats even after the string is burnt. This is because the string disappears after it is burnt and the salt crystals which are not much visible hold the ring. Awe the onlookers with this simple trick which does not require much hidden steps to be done for executing the magic trick. Trying it out many times prior to the actual performance will be a good practice.
Water to Ice Magic Trick:
Though this is very simple one, with neat presentation it is sure to receive rounds of applause from audiences. Inform the onlookers that you are going to pour water into a cup and will make ice cubes from it instantly. This needs the use of opaque cup with sponge placed at the bottom. Place few ice cubes in it either prior to the performance or carefully during the magic trick. All one has to do is flamboyantly pour water into the cup and the sponge will absorb the water completely. Thus be inverting the cups there will be ice cubes instead of water. Thus magic tricks can be done easily by the interested individuals.

Be Natural
The secret in having a great sleight of hand is your naturalness. There should be no hand wagging, no hand waving, jerky or quick motions. You should work naturally, deliberately, and slowly. If you master this, balls, coins, rings, cards, and coins will begin reappearing and disappearing at the tips of your fingers.
Watching your angles
You should be aware of your angles. Angles refer to the sleight lines between the item that you have just palmed off and the eye of your spectators. If you do not have the right angles, the audience could take a glimpse or see the object in your hand and your trick will be caught.

Magic Card Tricks And Card Marking
Contrary to what the audiences may think, the deck of cards that a performer is using is in no way ordinary. They are usually a special set of cards that are specifically prepared in order to perform a variety of tricks. This can be done in many various ways. If a performer makes use of ordinary cards, there are some techniques used to make them especially useful for magicians for their tricks.
What most magicians usually do to make their deck of cards "special" is by using marked cards. Card marking is actually a process in which seemingly ordinary playing cards are altered in such a way that only the person marking the cards is aware of it. Card marking is also usually being used by card sharks in cheating and profiting from betting card games.
In magic, card marking is an especially effective method of altering cards for the purpose of performing astonishing magic tricks. Marked cards can allow magicians to identify certain cards for magical effect. The most common card marking method has been punching holes on certain cards that only the performer can effectively distinguish. But card marking has also become more sophisticated with the use of advances in technology.
Newer methods of card marking make use of what is now called as shade technology. An example would be luminous marked cards. These are cards that make use of luminosity of the cards when a device such as a special pair of sunglasses or contact lens is used on them. Without the device, the cards may look like ordinary cards to onlookers. But with the sunglasses on, the cards can be seen differently along with the marks made on them.
There are also cards that are marked by the way that a deck of cards are designed. Some special cards may contain visible but tiny marks that can only be read by trained magicians who can read the tiny marks that double as codes. Sometimes marked card readers use eyeglasses in order to better read the tiny but unnoticeable to the untrained eye type of marks on the cards. These types of cards are usually designed so that the marked cards can be read from even a distance while another person may be holding them.
Marked cards outside the magic arena are used by some as a means to cheat at casinos or when gambling. In order to prevent this from happening, there are also other ways in which people can detect whether marked cards are being used. One of the most common ways of detecting them is by riffling or shuffling them. This method is commonly called as a gambler's riffle test.
It is simply done by riffling the cards carefully. If a deck of cards is marked, the marks will usually be noticed as if dancing from the back of the cards just like a cartoon drawn on each card back. This can be effective in detecting marked cards with physical marks such as tiny holes or depressions on them.

How to Perform Magic Tricks on the Streets
What you wear on the street is different from what you wear in a children’s party so don’t even think of wearing a tall black hat and suit. But still, you will need to wear a comfortable outfit and don’t forget to bring with you some tools for the trick.
To become a street magician, you must first learn some simple magic tricks. Ideally, these should have a lot of movement and color so that you will not only get the attention of a few people but a crowd. Some examples of those being used often include cards, coins, levitation and rings.
So you know nothing will go wrong, call a few friends over and perform in front of them. If the magic tricks go without any hitches, then good for you. Just keep practicing and do it also in front of others since this will help build your confidence. However, if there are some mistakes, be sure to fix it and don’t be afraid to get some feedback from them.
To be a good magician, you also have to a good entertainer. You achieve that by adding dialogue or a script to your act. Making people laugh and smile is a sign that you are amusing them. Once you have enough skill, you can get someone from the audience to help you perform the act so he or she can feel that they are part of the show.
Wearing a comfortable outfit is just a small part of the show. To draw a crowd, you have to select a place that has a lot of traffic as this will likely attract more attention. A good example could be near the subway station. Ideally, the area should be closed off to vehicular traffic. If there is a place where street magic is done regularly, find a spot there to put on your show.
The first act is the most important so make sure that it is very good so that others who walk by will stop and see what is going on. Make sure to make your voice loud yet clear so even people in the back can hear what you are saying. As mentioned before, get people from the audience to help you out because street magicians do not have any assistants whenever they perform a show.
When you are ending the act, don’t forget to ask for donations by putting a hat on the ground or carrying this around the crowd. Most people give a small contribution which is not bad for a few minutes of work. Don’t forget to thank them and try to come up with better tricks so there is always something different each time you go to your spot.
Performing magic tricks in the streets won’t help you make a fortune but it is a lot of fun. Who knows? You could get lucky and someone there in the audience could just give you that big break you were looking for or maybe hire you to do a small gig which will probably pay more than the dollars and pennies you find inside that hat.
